I can't change my hard drive name on my tray loading iMac. Usually, I can click on the name of a file or the hard drive icon, it turns light blue, and I can type whatever I wish. There is a little pencil with a line through it in the finder window. It looks like I don't have write permissions. Is that the problem? How can I fix it?
Thanks

Well you should have permission to change the drive names, if you are having issues repair the permissions and try again, if that doesnt work (which it should) make sure the drive is HFS+ and not UFS. It should always be HFS+ by default, so that shouldnt be an issue. You can change the root directory permissions but thats asking for a world of bad. The permissions that i currently have on my root drive, is System - rwx Group: admin rwx User r-x . that should be it, do NOT press "Apply to enclosed items..."
That should fix you're problems. or just cause more if you do it wrong... good luck. May the force be with you...be young have fun, drink pepsi, all that jazz. May god have mercy on you're soul.

Turn file sharing off, change the name, turn it back on.

'Fraid not; that's only if you're using Mac OS 9.
Are you an admin user on the machine whose hard drive you're trying to rename?

Make sure you are using an admin user
and run repair privileges. If that doesn't
work get info on the HD go to permissions
and make sure they are something like this
Owner: You (your login name)
Access: Read & Write
Group: Staff
Access: Read only
Others: Read only

Open up the Disk Utility and fix the permissions on the drive.
