Can anyone who is playing with 10.3 answer this question...

In 10.2 I use the screen effects password. When I come back to the machine and Jaguar asks for the password, the saver that is running behind the password window stops its animation.

I think a multithreaded screensaver engine would keep the animation running while the password window is displayed.

Does the Panther screensaver engine keep the animation running when the password dialog is displayed?

Dunno about the screensaver but I sure hope the Finder is multithreaded.

As I remember, the screensaver animation did not stop when there was a dialog asking for password back to the day in 10.0. But somehow they paused it after 10.1. It could be due to preformance issue.

I forgot how 10.0 worked, but maybe you're right about it. It does bug me that we're supposed to have one of the best multitasking operating systems in the world and yet the screensaver has to pause just to put up a password dialog. I think Apple, after giving us the Genie, transparent windows, and Quartz Extreme, would want to have an impressive screensaver engine for bragging rights.

I sent feedback to Apple about this "feature" after Jaguar came out. I can't imagine it would be hard to do if they could afford the resources. I'm curious about the result.

I think it's just to call attention to the fact that there's a dialog prompt up. I don't really think it has that much to do with resources and I definitely don't think it's a multithreading issue.

That could be it, I suppose. But I sure hope not. I think the animation should continue. It's obvious (to me) that the dialog is there.

You may well be right, but that would be a rather stupid decision. The only reason that dialog appears is if somebody is trying to enter a password (unlock the screen effects). Therefore, they'd likely know there should be a dialogue appear as soon as they start typing.
