I notice that 10.3 has fax support, which I'm about to try - notice it also has network stuff.

Is it compatible with the WinFax protocol, or more likely, hylafax?

Or have apple written their own stuff?

What Apple has done is definatly NOT that. The only "network" stuff Apple has done is allow you to "print" from one machine, and it sends from the other machine. It is a far (far) cry from a network fax client.

The fax support that is in panther looks to be prety basic, but should cover most consumers needs. It allows for sending, receiving, autoprinting incoming faxes, and auto emaling incoming faxes.

However, it has no browser to display faxes. It has no log or record keeping (that I can tell). I can't tell if they support more than the internal modem. I didn't see a modem init string section (for manipulating a modem init string if required). I am not sure if they have a schedule or queue mechanism.

All in all this should cover the casual faxes needs. Programs like FaxSTf are dead screwed now. There whole benifit was the bundle factor, which I am guessing is now dead. And who would buy their program over a free include or 2 much cheaper alternatives? Programs like PageSender and Cocoa eFax/FaxCenter can evolve a bit and still be very viable alternatives, as they offer many more features than this basic built in faxing.
