Here's a dumb one. Why don't I see a disk optimizer for OS X?

Granted, I haven't looked at the latest Norton Utilities, but I seem to remember Diskwarrior 2.1 having an optimizer component.

Just curious.

Can't really answer about optimizing. It's been discussed to death on these forums.

I can say DW2 never had a optimizer component. Alsoft (maker of Diskwarrior) does make a separate optimizer application for Classic Mac OS, though.

I've been using the optimizer that comes with Micromat's Drive 10 quite successfully

Not really, since it doesn't run under OS X.

Having to reboot into OS 9 (not being able to run it in Classic) should immediately disqualify any program by now.

Especially since my (and many others') primary machine won't even *boot* OS 9.

I found this article to explain why. Also, be sure to check out who the author is.

Doesn't Norton Systemworks 3.0 include an OS X version of Speed Disk?

Ditto.

From what I know OSX doesn't need optimization, jsut restart your computer and you're good to go.

So OS X is built to handle file allocation much better than others? Haven't noticed many problems in Jaguar.

I've had systems running 9.x that ran MUCH better after being optimized so I'd of the camp of doing it if you have the tools.

Will check out Drive 10, thanks guys!

How does the OS prevent fragmentation? I've never heard of this before....

Read the link provided by suthercd. Buying an optimizer is probably a waste of time and money. If you insist on doing it, just back up your drive with Retrospect or Carbon Copy Cloner (which you should do even if you use Drive 10) and reformat the drive. Same result in a fraction of the time, and free.
