It looks like you'd have to get some sort of custom IR card, write a driver for it, and then either use VPC or get them to port to OSX. I'd say that ranks as "impossibly hard and expensive".
Stuff like that pisses me off to no end. How hard would it be for Polar to hire a couple of programmers for a week to write a USB driver for the heartrate monitors? I would definitely write them and ask why there isn';t any Macintosh support. (or Linux support for that matter.)
