What is the best way to have my Xbox and my mac play together? I want to stream to Xbox media player. I am looking at Samba - is this the best route? thanks!

stream to it? Yeh, windows file sharing (samba) is the way to go. If you want to store stuff on the xbox you just ftp to it.

Im getting my xbox chipped so i can play all my mp3s and divxs on it. It will wail.

Samba is the standard unix package for implementing the SMB file sharing (and printer sharing) protocol usually used in Windows environments.

Yes, it is built into Mac OS X and you don't need to install anything to use it.

However, Samba has nothing to do with streaming services. It mearly does file sharing services. Are you sure it's streaming that you want, or just access to the MP3 files as stored on the remote computer?

I use the xbms commandline tool (http://wipux2.wifo.uni-mannheim.de/~ck/) with my X-box - works a lot more reliably (and much easier to setup) than Samba sharing to the X-box. Send me a pm if you need help setting xbms up.

After a few weeks of messing around, I am now posting this message from my Xbox running Gentoo. If you want any help, im me on aim (gilp1n). And no, you dont need to mod your xbox in ANY way to run xbox medial player or install linux (or windows for that fact) so dont bother wasting your money with a modchip.

What you need to install Gentoo (www.gentoo.org) onto your xbox:

An unmodded Xbox
A home network (or any new mac really)
USB - XBOX Adapter (you can get it free, search google for PSO adapter xbox)
Internet connection
Way of getting savegame hack from comp onto xbox (I use Action Replay, I hear mega key X or something is good too)

Either a windows PC, or Virtual PC (to run action replay software, i dont know if you need it for mega key x)

if you want to "share" files via the xbox, all you need is the ability to set up a streaming system (options are samba, xns, xbms - this is the most confusing aspect imo) and then set up the xbox media player (xboxmediaplayer.de) to see the mac and be able to stream stuff. you can also copy stuff to the xbox if you upgrade your hard drive. then you can play it off you xbox hard drive. be careful about the disc drives in the xbox: only the samsung drives can read cd-r's.

Wait wait wait...

You can put a media player on a XBox without a modchip?

Do you have to be a rocket scientist to figure it out?

Can you give detailed, or link to detailed instructions for dummies?

As someone stated in another thread, the whole hacking the XBox scene is not very kind to n00bs.

for xbox media player to work, you need a modded box. but it really is worth it to get it modded, you can do some crazy cool stuff with it. if you arnt interested in doing any soldering, there are some installers on the forums at xbox-scene.com - im getting a premod with a 120 gig hard and a chip drive for $375...

OwlBoy: Correct, you do not need a modchip, or even take apart the xbox!

If you want any help just message gilp1n on aim.

Xbox networking question for yall.

My network work like this:

Cable Modem --> Linksys Wireless AP/Router --> Apple Powerbook via Airport --> Ethernet cable to Apple G4 Tower --> Xbox via crossover ethernet cable

I havent gotten my xbox yet, but I was wondering if I need to do anything special because of this to have the xbox be able to connect to the internet ok. thanks!

PS - when i hooked my ps2 up to the network like this i needed to do some weird stuff with it, fyi.

yeah, the router has 4 ports, one is PC, one is Xbox

the powerbook feeds off the wireless on the same router, every machine wireless or wired gets a 192.168.1.* IP

everything works dandy
