I'm trying to learn how to use MySQL with PERL and am wondering if it's installed in the normal (not server) version of Mac OS X 10.2.6. If not, which is the best way to install it?

My understanding is that it is only installed by default in the server version of OS X.

It's not installed on the consumer version of Mac OS X. However, a quick search for mysql on versiontracker.com will give you serveral mysql installers.

Which one is the best. I'm particularly concerned with future OS updates not being messed up by anything low level I install. This installation is for testing and learning only.

Marc Liyanage's website http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/mysql/ is easy to understand and his package, http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10425 is very nice and straight forward. Like it says, it's not the official release, but good and stable nonetheless.

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/8252 is the official release from Mysql.com. Haven't used that one, but it;s the official one...

The last time I was a student was in '74. Thankfully, I still have a job as a sys admin. It isn't all that bad, as most everyone I know is employed. General Electric laid off several hundred last year and a few larger corps went out of business or moved to another city.

Get the lastest version direct from mysql.com

downloads

Scrol down to the "Mac OS X Package Installer downloads" section and choose the Standard one.

Everyone else's installer, including mine (the first and most out of date MySQL installer for OSX!) began as a stop-gap measure becasue mysql did not have a pre-compiled version for OSX on the website.

They have one now, so why not get it from the source!

Even if you get it somewhere else you should visit the site anyway to read the anotated documentation.
You can take the dude out of So Cal, but you can't take the dude outta the dude, dude!
