Why is my dock on the side instead of the middle?

My dock defaults to the left when I choose to have it on the bottom of the screen, and the top corner when I choose to have it on the left or right. I'd like it in the middle.
How can i get to go back to the middle?
Thanks

Have you installed any hacks or utilities that mess with dock settings?

Quit lying down on your side when you use your computer.

ha ha ha....I'll try that! Yes, I did install the old dock that allowed you to minimize in place (was never released) but then I replaced it with the original jaguar dock and it still behaves like this.

Delete your com.apple.dock.plist file and see if that does the trick...
If you log in as another user, do you get the same behavior?

Well the dock that lets you minimize in place is super-duper unstable. which is why they didn't release it in the final version of 10.2. I'd recommend you trash preferences for the dock (/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist). and then kill the dock with the process manager (it will start right back up) and see if that does the trick.

I like your wording better, good job...I almost guarantee that will cure this dilemma.

Because you put it there!
Go to Dock preferences and select "Middle" as position on screen.
If middle is already selected, try setting it to left, then middle.
If that don't work, trash the dock preferences file.

I deleted the dock preferences and my dock is back to the middle again. Strange because i used the minimize in place dock for months on my old powerbook G4 and 10.2 without a problem. It wasn't unstable at all in my experience. Anyway, too bad Apple didn't release that feature.
I guess i really do need to learn more about the internal workings of macos x.....
Thanks for the advice.I think it's great that there is such a support community on the mac platform. I still have never encountered a problem that couldn't be solved by somebody around here...nice. And it's amazing how quickly people respond too. : )

I've used the MIP dock since it was leaked and I've never had ANY problem with it at all. I can't figure out why it wasn't released.

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

I've still got it installed and haven't had a single problem with it either. In fact I had forgotten about it until I read this thread.

I use the MIP dock too, with no problems.
Your dock was on the left because its pinning was set to left. Pinning is a hidden option that some 3rd-party apps will let you configure and can be specified in com.apple.dock.plist... I always keep my dock pinned to the left.

Well, one problem with the MIP dock is that option-click to hide previous application and command-option-click to hide all but frontmost application don't work... but I guess none of you ever use that feature, huh? Command-option-clicking is sort of a poor man's Exposé...
Anyway, next time you want to change the position of your Dock without the unfortunate side effect of resetting the Dock back to showing Apple default applications and that Mac OS X Internet Location sproingy thing, just go into the Terminal and type this:
defaults write com.apple.Dock pinning middle
Then log out or kill the Dock, and you'll be all set.
