Can I still login to Darwin via ">terminal"?

My brother was wondering if you can still login straight to Darwin without loading OS X.
You used to be able to login as ">terminal" or something like that in version 10.1, but they got rid of it in 10.1.x and up... or did they just change it?
He used to have his computer set up so he'd auto-login and boot into Darwin, then he sudoed bootx and startx (bootx for OS X, startx for OpenStep). It was pretty cool.
Anyhoo, he can't do it anymore.

">terminal" is wrong. It's ">console."
Two ways to access it in OS X 10.2, depending on how your login panel is set up.
If it is set up as a list of names you click on to enter your password, then you need to enable root in Netinfo Manager. This will add an option called "Other..." that you can click on. Once there, you can enter a username (">console") and go.
If you'd rather not enable root, then just change the login panel to the enter name/password option. Again, just enter ">console" as the login name.

No need to enable root. You can access the "Other" user by pressing option-shift-downarrow then return, while at the login screen. Or, press the down arrow to highlight one of the standard listed users, then while holding down the option key, press return. These, unlike enabling root, are temporary measures, though.

How on earth did you ever figure out that pressing option-shift-down arrow and then pressing return would display the "other" option when root is not enabled? I really wish Apple would clearly document these things...
As it is, I keep root enabled for this reason alone. I don't log in as root (and yes, I've set a non-trivial password with letters, numbers, symbols, and different cases).
