i have a dual 500 gigabit G4 machine with a PCI radeon 7000. i tried installing mandrake 9.1 but couldn't find drivers for the video card. my linux/unix roomate has been slaving over it trying to get the generic video driver to let me go above 800x600. i was just wondering if there was a better distro out there for my system or if there was some update i haven't found yet. thanks.

I feel your pain. Mandrake won't install on my Sawtooth with a Radeon 8500. The real sad thing is it doesn't install on my new 12" PB!
If I find anything I'll let you know, but haven't yet...

I never was able to figure this out on my Beige G4. Pity too, because my crappy old Rage Orion worked great, I even had video and 3D acceleration. Interestingly enough, the card is supported, since various incantations of "video=radeonfb:vmode:x:cmode:x" would periodcally cause the card not to work at all, and "vidoe=ofonly" would cause the console to be terribly slow. If anyone can figure out how to get radeonfb to work properly at other resolutions, please post!

It doesn't matter which distro, I personally was referring to Debian (the only distro I'll ever use). The radeonfb issue only seems to affect Radeon 7000 PCI cards, and is an issue with the kernel itself. This sucks because on Macs, the only way to get fully accelerated X11 is the UseFBDev option, which causes X11 to use the current framebuffer device, as defined by the kernel at startup. Like I said, I was able to get it to use 800x600 fully accelerated (video=radeonfb:vmode:14, IIRC), but no other resolution would work, including 1024x768.
As for your roommate, I would suggest just using the stock graphics card. Perhaps have him try the latest Yellow Dog ISO? I don't care much for YDL (or any RPM-based distro), but they seem to be pretty bleeding-edge in terms of supporting new Apple hardware.
