Is it possible for somebody to write a plugin that allows to people to have an encrypted chat?

My favorite thing about trillian (windows) and yahoo (corporate edition) is that it allows to people to have a secure chat.

We need something like this built into iChat so I don't have to make sure my buddy has another 3rd party program.

Agreed, this would be nice in corporate world too when I am talking bad about my boss to fellow co-workers.

Considering all of the things iChat could get, I would consider this low in the "to do" list. I love video chat, but we still need Groups. That's A #1 for me...

But yes, a secure version would be interesting/nice.

I could have sworn I have seen "Groups" in the AV version...

Unfortunately the implementation kinda blows. The only thing I use it for is to keep out people "I don't want to talk to but still might need to talk to" out of my buddy list

Agree as well it needs to have a hook to OpenSSL that the OS provides and u should be able to use any cipher.

I've found myself wishing for this as well; the problem is that Apple would likely have to wait until it was implemented in the AIM protocol, which is something they do not control.

Fire has encrypted chats. How is this different or not as desirable as secure chat?

The only problem with Windows AIM is that you need to get a digital certificate from a certifying authority in order to have encrypted conversations, and that costs money. SSL would be very nice though.

Let's hope her best friend also has 'secure/encrypted chat'.

Sounds like a perfect job for Apple. Send them a suggestion on iChatAV. Maybe we'll get encryption in the final version.
