Thanks all for reading and any help provided.
First off I am fairly new the Mac OS so forgive me if there is a simple fix. I had left my 12" powerbook alone running in my office for a couple of days (only thing active was ML Donkey and Mail. When I went back to the machine, I discovered 10-12 pop up windows that said something about could not save settings and mail had bombed. I rebooted and all the dock settings had revereted to default settings (Size and apps in dock were as if first boot), and when I started mail It asked me to setup a mailbox because there was no mailbox on the machine. Also Safari no longer works, it bombs when loading. Any ideas on what happend? My main priority is to recover the old mail, I ran the Disk Utility to fix permissions but that did not help. I also did the import in mail against the Mail setting in the user folder but it only brought back a few of the folders and not the primary in box.
Thanks again.

Sounds like you ran out of hard disk space.
Is your disk near full?
If not, it might be that mlDonkey has a memory leak that after a few days of continuous running used all your free disk space as virtual memory...
As a fix, I suggest a restart, disk repair, and permissions repair.

I had the same problem a few months back... dunno why it happened don't think it's the storage - as I had hundreds of megs left... nearly a gig. I just gritted my teeth and dragged back all my favs into the dock.. and re-set up my mail settings for email - I could recover all old emails from the Mail folder in the User Library - have you checked there? I also took a screen shot of the email login details - in case it happened again I could quickly get up and running- and low.. yesterday mail dropped out on me - went back to default - dock is ok though - Safari and Explorer prefs all binned too.. wierd city! Damn this great OS X! Anyone else got answers???
