I would like to learn about LDAP on Unix. My usual approach is to download some opensoure software and then buy a book. But the that usually takes a few iterations and I have ended up buying some crappy books in the past. So this time I asking around before I engage in anything.
I can code in Java, C, Objective-C, Perl, and Unix shells. So feel free to recommend something that's heavy on the development side.
Thanks!

Did you start by looking here: http://www.openldap.org/ ? Try your question there... on one of their mailing lists.

openldap comes with OSX
/usr/libexec/slapd
see /etc/openldap/slapd.conf for configuring.

signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.

I wouldn't mind knowing if there were one or two books that were head and shoulders above the rest but I learned most of what I learned from the web. Aside from the great stuff at openldap, you should check out http://www.padl.com. They actually contributed to Apple's LDAP code. They not only have a good collection of their own articles but also an excellent collection of links.

What about LDAP System Administration from O'Reilly? Those books tend to be very good, even though I can't say anything about this one.
