hello everyone
this might be very simple, but I’m stuck. Is there a way to update my iTunes music from my iPod? I reinstalled OSX and now have a full iPod and empty iTunes.
any suggestions?
thank you!

That's not a very helpful answer. (Read the man page? Exactly what shell command are you even referring to?)

Go to VersionTracker. There are many programs available that will let you copy songs off your iPod.

Here's two programs that will do this:

Just go into your ipod with Terminal

cd /Volumes/iPod/iPod_Control/Music/

You will see a lot of folders (depending on how much music you have). You can then cp * (copy everything) to your music dir. This is the best solution for copying an entire library into an empty library.

PS - I am using the most recent version iPod software. I was told that other versions change the directory the music was in. You may have to search.

And that's what most of us are here for too. To help people, regardless if the question has been asked before or the answer is somewhere else on the web.

Yeah, ain't it funny how we all sometimes overlook the super simple, thinking it must be harder.

I thought you couldn't do that... thought Apple put a block on it. Am I wrong?

Except that won't work. You can't copy from the iPod to iTunes without special software.

no, you can't.

just tried it with a (first generation) iPod, latest firmware and iTunes 4 and it doesn't work.

it is not supposed to, as this would make it too easy to steal music.

Yeah it's not possible to do this in iTunes. If it was the iTunes music store would be gone very quickly.

But anyone who knows simple unix at all (if you are reading macnn forums you are definately capable) can copy songs through Terminal.

I don't know if you can make the folder visible.. but then you could copy from the Finder. All MP3s are totally unorganized though.

It does work! I've done it myself before now.

rocheb gave you the answer:

open Terminal
cd /Volumes/iPod/iPod_Control/Music/
cp * ~/Music

Then in iTunes, add the music to your library.

Chris

ps. benb - you can say 'man page for ditto' as many times as you like. It's like me saying 'man page for cd' or 'man page for cp' and expecting them to work out the above. Look up the man page for attitudeproblem.

I can't speak for the others, but when I was saying it doesn't work, I was referring to the drag-and-drop method in iTunes recommended above.

The Terminal method does work. You can also use the Finder to copy your music over. If you use the Finder's "Go to Folder..." command, you can type in the path to the iPod's music folder. It will then open that folder in the Finder. Now you can just simply drag it to your personal music folder.

People have to remember that not everyone who reads the forums here is technically inclined enough to understand what someone is referring to when you say "read the man page for ditto"

Even if they knew what you meant, then they may not even know how to interpret the man page.

Also, if you're going to link to a program, why not take the extra step and link to the actual developer's page instead of linking to VersionTracker's entry? Doing it that way means one has to go to VersionTracker and then click through an annoying advertisement to get to download the file.

Here are direct links to the developers of the programs listed above:
