This is the spanning hack that is used on iBooks?
How safe is it? I didn't think it would be possible without going into OF.
Who's going first?

It is supposed to work with iBooks, iMacs and eMacs, according to the magazine.
I'll buy the magazine today and see what they write to the script. If it's not too much text, I'll translate and post it later.

Sweet. They even have a version for closed lid operation without exchanging the kernel! The c't magazine is great.

What does closed lid operation mean? Is it a does-what-it-says-on-the-tin thing? I'll be using an external TFT with my iBook.

After a brief Google search, it looks to be a hack to allow extended desktops on certain Macs which don't already allow it. Basically, it lets you use a 2nd display to have 1 giant desktop.

I've run the hack via command line before and it almost killed my iBook. I'd say it's better to leave it as is then to be sorry later.

How would setting a single OF-Variable kill the iBook?

Well I've used the TV out dongle and watched a movie for about a half hour, then the screen went blank but you could still see the picture on TV. After I unpluged the dongle the screen still wouldn't show up, so I rebooted the computer and the screen started flickering. The flickering wouldn't stop for about 3-4 hours even though I've reset the pram. It returned to normal after being shut down for a while ...
