After installing OpenFirmware on my 5 day old Powerbook I cannot boot to the CD. I am able to boot to the HD and when I reset the OpenFirmware as per the Apple documentation I still cannot boot from the CD....UGGHHH!!! Is there any way to uninstall Open Firmware? Apple has no documentation on how to do this or I cant find how to. I have tried all the OPTION at start up but only the HD shows as the only available boot device not the CD thats in the drive.

How can I resolve this without re-installing my OS? I won't to avoid that even though the system boots fine what if I have to boot to a CD for some reason? HELP!!!!

Well I figured it out...I was trying to boot from an original Jag CD on my 17" Al...I also tried to boot from an OS 9 cd which i thought either should work but I then tried the original DVD install disk that came with my PB (i know I should of tried that first) and it worked. There must be something in the bios that only allows you to boot from the original DVD's not an OS -CD. Has anyone been able to boot their 17" from an OS 9 cd or Original Jag cd???

It seems Open Firmware works as advertised preventing to boot to single, verbose, CD-boot, or Target disk mode. Just have your original install disks handy in case of a problem.

The 17" PowerBooks can not boot OS 9. Also, they require a newer version of OS X 10.2 (10.2.3 I believe) to boot than what is on the original Jaguar install CDs. Open Firmware password will let you boot from any supported CD once you provide a valid password. The key is to use a valid CD. OS 9 and OS X 10.2 aren't supported by your Mac.

The install DVD has Jag 10.2.4 on it so it must see any other version lower than that as inferior in a sense.

The previous versions don't have the necessary drivers required for the 17" PowerBook. Generally, any Mac will require the currently available OS version or later when they are announced. In your case 10.2.4 was the current OS version when the 17" PBs started shipping.

So, if you had a 10.2.4 or higher CD/DVD, it would work in addition to the DVD included with your Mac.
