I am running OS 10.2.6 on a G4 450 with 512 MB RAM. The problem I have is that the system completely locks up all day long. It seems to do it the most in Photoshop when moving a layer or in Quark when moving around the document. I get the feeling it is related to the video card, but I'm not sure what to do about it. I have checked the Kernel Panic logs and there's nothing there- nor any of the other logs for that matter... I am considering going back to OS9 because I am unable to get anything done.
BTW- how can I check my firmware version?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There was a firmware update required for certain Mac's. You could download the latest firmware update for your Mac and run it. If no firmware update is required, you'll be informed.
I can't help but wonder about bad RAM... knowing that Mac OS X is fussier than 9.
Meanwhile, after checking your firmware, try creating a new user and seeing if the problems persist.
Either way, we'll take it from here...

tried doing a fresh install of the system? If you have an extra drive or another partition try installing Mac OS on that and see if you have the same problem. If you don't it was a software issue. If you do it is probably a hardware issue.

Or if you don't it could be the hard drive. If you do then you can rule the harddrives out but it's most likely hardware.

Tried removing the RAM- still the same.
Changed the User (Made a new one) - same
In order to update the firmware, we need to boot from OS 9, which we will try next.
Obviously, the last thing we want to do is a clean install, loading the 30+apps back on will consume half a work day.
Don't have a partition...

Yeah, but you sound like youre already consuming more than half the workday making impotent not-helpful attempts to rectify the situation. Just get it over with. You'll be happier.
You can also try an archive and install. that way many of your apps will still work aight.

There was a problem on Adobe's side that it's Altivec PlugIn for Photoshop could cause the system to freeze on early G4 Sawtooth systems (like yours).
There was an Altivec Plugin update a few month later (the download should still be there on Adobe's webpage). Alternatively you could first try to remove the Plugin completely (Altivec Core is the name) and see if the issue is fixed. If this works, do the update.
I hope this helps.
