I have that OS X bug where, when online, the modem will stop responding. I'll go to the Menu Bar and select "Disconnect." And the modem will just show "Disconnecting," since I have "Show status when connecting" selected.

Even putting the machine to sleep and waking it up again does nothing to end this condition. "Disconnecting..." Just continues to scroll in the Menu Bar. Same thing if I open Internet Connect and try to work from there, in order to reconnect.

The only solution is a hard reset.

I'm thinking there has to be a Terminal solution for this. Some command I can type to make the modem reset and knock it off.

----

Changing the modem type and turning off error correction prevents this, but makes my already-slow dial-up connection so much slower as to be unusable. I'd rather reboot every half hour (yeah, it's that bad!) than connect at 9600.

Any help on that Terminal command is appreciated!

Merci.

Edit:
I should add, this is only a problem on my iMac, not on the PowerBook, even though their OS X modem/PPP settings are the same.

Well, if you download an application that can communicate directly with your modem, you can issue AT commands directly.

ATH to hang up.

I do this on my old 5500 to control the modem to answer incoming calls for an automated system I have set up. Works flawlessly.

I don't know an OSX app to use, though... the one I use is OS9 only.

ATZ reset the modem

You can use the sample app in AMSerial to talk to a modem:
