I am running PC MacLan 8.0 on Win 2000 and OS 10.2 on the Mac, and have learned there are incompatibilities between the two. Shouldn't the Mac be able to communicate directly with MS networking and bypass the incompatible version of PC MacLan? So far, I am only able to see my computer - PC MacLan on the Mac.

Isn't maclan an AFP server for Windows? You should be able to just connect to the server using the built-in SMB support of OS X.

In the connect window, instead of using

AFP://<servername>

use
cifs://<servername>
or
smb://<servername>

That said, the SMB support in Jag is still a bit buggy, it doesn't allow filenames with []'s in the filename for example. And every version of 10.2 except for 10.2.6 and 10.2.4 had some pretty serious data corruption bugs as well.
