Okay, for a couple of days, the laptop has been going slow. Anything that we do takes a long time since the cursor turns into that rainbow circle and is just like that for a very long time. So there is obviously something wrong with the computer.
So today, we started up our computer to have the computer just stay on the gray Apple screen. That's all that happens, we can't do anything now, it's weird. I looked on the support site. I disc. all peripherals, ran the fsck -y (and said it was fine) but no luck.

restart with the apple cd in it, and run disk utility from the file menu in the installer app and have it verify your hard drive and fix the permissions.
reboot without the cd and see if it works, if not you'll likely have to try reinstalling OSX.
there might be something wrong with the machine tho, if you have a hardware diagnostics cd i'd run it or bring it to apple store to check it out before reinstalling the OS.

We tried to boot into the Mac os X CD but that doesn't even work.
How will I reinstall OS X?

If you can't even boot the CD it seems to be hardware related.

"Stuck on the gray screen"? But at what stage? Do you even get the spinner? If you get the spinner, try booting with cmd-v held down.

What laptop and what version of OS X? Later laptops require a Mac OS 10.2.3 boot disk. Be sure you are not using a 10.2.0 one.

I did the cmd-v thing and it gets into like a terminal like screen. That seems to work. And yes, the thing is always spinning.
I'm using the new Powerbook G4. We used the Mac OS X cd that came with out iMac since we can't find the CDs that came with the Powerbook, could that be a problem? It says on the CD that it should work with the Powerbook.

Can you tell waht version of OS X you are running? Check in the About this Mac under the Apple menu. How old is the iMac?
Those CDs are going to be very valuable and I'd sure try to find them- really.

The Powerbook was running the newest version of Jaguar, 10.2.6 or whatever.
The iMac is one of the flat-planel ones..don't know why you needed to know that though.

In that case, what does it actually say towards the bottom of the screen? cmd-v should boot you into a usable OS but verbosely so you can see what's happening.

I don't think you iMac's cd will work, those laptops probably require 10.2.6. I know my tibook requires 10.2.3. Most likely your iMac came with 10.2.

Booting with Command-V is just a regular boot, except that all the status messages - AND ERROR MESSAGES - that are usually hidden behind the Gray Apple and progress screens are shown.
If the machine boots some and then hangs...and hangs...and hangs...take a look at the last few messages. They're usually somewhat self-explanatory, and if it hangs, the last messages will usually tell you what part of the boot process it's actually hanging on.

If you get the same thing from your OS X 10.2.6 install as well as the OS X CD, it's most likely hardware. You should just call up Apple and have them send a box. It sounds like your PowerBook is less than a year old so they'll take care of it.
