I searched this but didn't see a topic. What are Receipts? It is found here: Hard Drive -> Library -> Receipts. They seem to be remains or left overs from installer packages such as Safari and OSX Updates. Can they be removed safely? I just want to know. Thanks.

[EDIT:] Sorry again folks, I found the answer posted by Sven G. And since the forum doesn't let me delete this thread, here is the answer to my own question.

Another "famous" package uninstaller is OSXGNU's OSXPM ("OS X Package Manager", that is). The newest version is OSXPM 2.0 beta: personally, I haven't actually used it - so, if you find it interesting, try it with caution, like you should with any other uninstaller...

No, Mac OS X (or Software Update) uses the receipts to see what updates you have installed - don't remove them.

- My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right.

You can also get Desinstaller and use them to uninstall programs.

Software Update can also check the Apps folder or elsewhere to see if an update has been installed. It doesn't soley rely on receipts to function. You can remove the receipts, but you may be harassed to install certain updates again. For the most part, it will still know what's installed.

Receipts do help keep track of the updates that have been installed. They were also supposed to allow the user to uninstall things that were installed, but Apple removed that functionality from Installer.

But they aren't the only way. You can delete all of your receipts and not be prompted to install that package again. I deleted all the receipts out of the image for our labs, which saved about 100MB. Software Update doesn't try to install the same items again.

I know that a user on another forum had some problems after deleting his receipts. I don't remember the specifics, but to be safe I'd not recommend deleting any reciepts.
