My ibook came with both OSX and 9 installed, do I need both? and if not how do I remove 9.
I have never started 9 up at all.

Move OS9 directory to trash --> empty trash. And you are set.

If you never intend to run any Classic applications (and it sounds like you don't), you don't need OS 9 at all.
I'd get rid of it myself if I didn't have a bunch of old applications that I'm too lazy and cheap to upgrade.

There's no good reason to remove OS9. You may need it one day.

Only if you have apps that only work in Classic or must be installed in OS9...
Dunno, lipstick are you new to the mac ? If so she probably doesn't have old software that need OS9...
So it's pretty safe to trash it (OS9).
BTW: Cipher you are back with +12000 posts, you got a few back.

Haha, yeah, just noticed today.
The reason I say to keep it... well... certain apps require it. To run an updater to update Unreal Tournament or Quake, etc...
There's just really no reason NOT to keep it, y'know?

I've noticed one app (I forgt now) that required OS9 to install, it was an OSX app but the installation cranked up classic.
Another reason to keep it is, if your having file problems its sometimes easier to boot into os9 and delete the offending file. If you have the space available then there's no harm in keeping it.

Yep. And hey, if OSX breaks down horribly, boot OS9 and clean up the mess... back up files... etc. My point is... you never know.

Yep, that's what I meant.. Some older apps don't install yet in OSX. But my point is if she's new to the mac she doesn't have these apps. (unless she warez them). You see what I mean ?
But yeah, you could always keep it. It doesn't take up a lot of space.
So lipstick: Do what you feel like

If you need the space terribly, then you can delete 9. Otherwise, it's a good idea to keep it around as others have previously noted.
Cipher, did you cry the day Jobs burried 9?

Okay I guess it stays then, not that I would know how to fix anything with it, if something happened to OSX since I just switched and know nothing yet.
Thanks everyone for the advice

Lipstick is to new to know that Cipher is an OS9 lover and only trying to keep the OS9 user base up so he can justify his daily emails to Jobs about how he's crazy to drop OS9 development because of the shear numbers of Mac Users still using it.
Honestly, Lipstick will probable NEVER need OS9. I'd been using the old OS for 8 years prior to switching to OSX and haven't looked back. Yes I have plenty of old software that needs OS9 but your just putting off the inevitable. It's a personal choice. I really only miss one piece of software that hasn't been ported to OSX yet but soon, real soon.
I'm guessing with 10.3 OS9 won't be an option anymore anyway. At least with classic?

How new is your computer? You may not be able to boot OS 9 at all, in which case you might as well remove it. If it's an older machine, keep it, since it's tiny, and doesn't hurt.

I use OSX full time on every machine I can run it on, and have since 10.1. Since 10.2, I only boot OS9 for games, and heavy photoshop.
I'm im the process of migrating every machine at work to OSX, and have migrated all servers to OSX Server apart from the NetWare servers.
I'm doing what, to keep OS9 alive?

I removed OS 9 from my new computers as well. In addition to the directory /System Folder (NOT /System - you can tell by the little 'X' or '9' labeling the dir), there are a couple of other directories you should drag to the trash as well - somebody correct me if I'm wrong:
/Documents
/Applications (OS 9)
/Desktop
Each of these folders is in the root directory (directly under the hard drive), and NOT in any "Users" folder. Do not delete anything in /Users/<username> in an attempt to expunge OS 9.
The irritating thing to me about leaving OS 9 on the system is the occasional file association with an OS 9 application. SimpleText for example. You'll get a README that thinks it needs OS 9's SimpleText to open, and it goes into launching the Classic environment, which you then have to kill, change the application association, and then reopen, all just to read a text file. Too much confusion for me.

lipstick.smears,
Since you are going to be keeping Classic (OS9) installed on your drive, I would recommend you go to your System Preferences -> Classic and make sure it is set to *NOT* start up automatically and to always prompt you before starting.
That way you don't always have it running in the background unknowingly taking up precious memory and CPU cycles.
