This afternoon I went to repair permissions on my boot disc and ran into some extremely worrisome messages.

Running Disc Utility under Mac OS X 10.2.6, the program is saying repeatedly for hundreds (probably thousands) of files that "Permissions not corrected on..."

The reason is: Operation not permitted.

What the heck is going on around here!?

I had the idea of going into NetInfo Manager and enabling a login as root, but that application won't let me do it. Something about a failure to write to the disc.

So far, the machine is functional. But I'm thinking this is going to screw me unless I solve it. Please help me solve this weirdness. Thanks!

Try and boot from you Mac OS X CD and fix permissions from that.

I just did that for the third time. The permissions keep going haywire, simply after opening my key application, FCP4 (which, yes, I own a legit copy of). I think I must have a virus or some kind of corruption on that disc.

Have to keep repairing permissions after capturing lots of clips, and usually it doesn't find much if anything at all. This last few hours, tons of stuff is sudddenly owned by "501".

My personal stuff is backed up. Going to reinstall OS X on a different disc, take out the offending hard drive, see what happens. Don't have time for this zaniness. Time is money.

Thanks for your prompt response.

I'll probably reformat that drive and plop it in one of my firewire enclosures. Will report back if the problem is persistent.

FYI, "501" is you. That's the identifier for the first user (admin user?) created on a machine.

Fascinating.

Then I wonder why Disc Utility was trying to "correct" that permission? I know that I'm not supposed to "own" most of the stuff on my drive. Many of the offending files were iLife html files, some were preference files for iChat and iSync. Seemed like each time I went to run the program there were different occurrences of permissions problems.

Anyhoo, I'm up and running on a new disc, I've been capturing clips and running disc utility and there are no problems with permissions.

I haven't done it yet, but I will reformat that drive and redeploy it in some fashion.

Curious and bizarre, but I'm up and running again after a relatively minor detour.
