Not sure about doing this just with an AppleScript, but there are a couple of 3rd-party key-mapping programs that can set this up for you. My personal fav is iKey.

I want to program some function keys (F1-F16) to do certain functions, for example, I'd like to program the function keys to copy and paste, along with entering text such as my email address, phone number etc. at the click of a function key.

Is iKey 2.0 the best program for this or is there another program out there that will do this better. I see that Xing has been discountinued for unknown reasons. I'm not sure what that program would do anyhow.

Ok, I downloaded Maestro and copied it to my Applications folder, but I can't find the option to asign functions to the Function keys. I need to assign "Copy" and "Paste" to a function key. I tried it with a clipboard thing, but it didn't work very well. All I got was a clipboard pop up window evertime I wanted to copy and paste. I don't think this is going to work.

Well, I can't tell you exactly. I used to run KM for free, but the new version doesn't allow that. Anyway, you're going to create a new shortcut (in the first tab, not clipboard). You're going to assign a keystroke (your function key) to another keystroke (Cmd-C or Cmd-V). It should be pretty straightforward.

I'd recommend Butler for setting hot keys, it's free and has many features of the shareware apps plus about a million things more.

For applescript connecting, there is a way to make a script push a button for you. I think the info's on Apple's support pages, sorry too drunk to look it up now.
