I have a G3 beige which has Mac OS X downloaded. Now I try to install my old programs like photoshop but a message comes up saying I can't install withou Mac OS 9 to run the Classic environment. I go to the Startup Disk but can't find OS 9 in it. It didn't come with Mac OS X. Can someone please tell me how I can trouble shoot this? Do I need to get a copy of OS 9?

Thanks for replying, Jill. Would having 2 operating systems take up a lot of memory on my computer? Do you know I can use OS 8 instead of OS9?

No. 9.1 is the minimum. What did you run before installing X? (i.e. what did you install x over?)

As far as operating systems go, OS 9 is relatively light-weight. If you're only using it for Classic and not as a full operating system, you can slim it down quite a bit, too.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Just checked the memory use for a stripped down OS 9.2.2 and OS X. TruBlueEnv, the name of the process that Classic apps run within, is using 32 MB of real memory and 179 MB of virtual memory. That is a light footprint.

For comparison, NetNewsWire is using 33 MB, Safari 26 MB, Mail 24 MB, BBedit 10 MB ( real memory)

MacOSXhints in their archives has a description of a "stripped down" System Folder, or others on the list can chip in.

I am using a 1GB Ti Powerbook w/1GB of memory. My virtual memory at the moment is 5.15 GB, wired mem 87 MB, Active 235 MB, Inactive 265 MB and Free 437 MB.

Second post-

Interesting, I restarted Classic and it now is ussing 22 MB of real memory. In the new AAACHOoanther upate the Activiry Monitor app shows all kinds of info that I had to use the Terminal to get. Nice going, Apple.
