After arriving in Philly yesterday i was staring tiredly at the deptartures video screen, looking for my connecting gate, when all of a sudden i was looking at a whole grid of OSX desktops, filling a whole wall. It was somewhat surreal, but then as i looked closer, i realized they were using some combo of OSX, VNC, and a presentation app to run the boards. The whole thing was pretty cool, other than the fact that i saw some crashed screens later...

Whoa...that's pretty impressive if Macs were truly behind the data...most major places like that never use Apple.

Nothing but a nice OS X "theme" on XP probably...

Wow, I never thought the Philly airport would use OS X, even if it's just an XP theme!

Were you in the new Int'l Airport that was just built or in the older sections? I'd love to check out those Macs if they really exist. Gotta see it with my own peepers.

Too bad they crashed...

Jetta-gt is correct, the Philadelphia airport does use OS X as it's backbone for it's information screens. It is more than a skin - I have been flying out of the new terminal regularly and they are still working out kinks...I got to stand and watch them reboot the entire system and the start-up is definitely X.

It is nice to see X used for something besides graphic work or video on that level.

Nice story. It proves that our platform is starting to get a better reputation out there for handling major tasks. Playing with the big guys so to speak.

I was at Heathrow in London and they were running some Windows variant on their flight departure screens that crashed around 8 times in half an hour. And after the machine rebooted, it complained that the disk was screwed and it couldn't boot. Yes, I'm aware that Windows normally doesn't crash this often, but it was funny.

Until it got annoying. Don't run stuff that doesn't work or isn't set up properly at airports! It took me 4 hours to get my gate.

Back to topic, it would be interesting to ask someone there why they switched, what they switched from, and how they're liking it so far. I doubt they switched because they have lots of Mac workstations littered around, so it must be some other reason.

Thats real cool!

I wonder what app they use for the presentations.

A custom cocoa app would work great
