Yes. I'm quite sure that someone within Apple knows but they aren't telling.

No. They certainly have projections, but since they haven't announced a date, nothing is final.

Learn how to use capital letter properly. It is MacOS X, not MACOSX. It is not an abbreviation
Sorry but this little thing annoyed me the most.

Actually it's Mac OS X. If you're going to be pedantic, you might as well get it right.

As long as we are being pedantic to the pedant, the word is abbreviation - abbreviate is a verb.

Both MacOS X and Mac OS X is a registered trademark of Apple. I know Apple is encouraging the latter but MacOS X isn't wrong.

Well, as long as this is turning into a grammar thread, "Both MacOS X and Mac OS X are registered trademark s of Apple."
But yeah, it is depressing. Gots ta have my Panther now!

Actually it is an abbreviation for "Macintosh Operating System Ten", if you want to nitpick.

FWIW -- my Apple enterprise rep e-mailed me this morning from Panther training classes. His 'hint' was that we'll see Panther very soon, much sooner than most people have been guessing. We're looking forward to some very specific functionality present in Panther so his hint will hopefully lead to some truth!

Yeah, I think what you were trying to say is that Mac is not an acronym. It is an abbreviation of course and OSX is an acronym. Can someone correct me?

OSX isn't an acronym. What would the "X" stand for? (Ten doesn't start with an X)
Pity, or it would be a TLA. TLA being a TLA for TLAs, of course.

I just hate it when people go

or ... is the MAC going to die...
or even.. Freeware for your MAC.
FYI, MAC does NOT mean Mac.

MAC is an ethernet hardware address.
I just love when people make reference to:
- Mac as a company
- MacIntosh as a word that exists
- McIntosh as a computer
- Macintosh as a fruit

Hey Detrius,
You live in Asheville I see. That's cool. I live in Waynesville, but work in Asheville (WLOS-TV). Anyways, I have a friend that's always saying stuff like, "Do you think Mac is going to update the iBook soon?" He's a switcher though, so that's good.

Actually TLA itself isn't a three letter acronym, its a three letter abbreviation, as an acronym is an abbreviation you pronounce as a whole word (eg. NATO) and an abbreviation is just an abbreviation. I mean, you say "T...L...A".
And the X in OS X does stand for ten, as in the roman numeral. In fact it doesn't stand for it, it actually is it!

To reduce confusion from now onwards an Apple Macintosh computer will no longer be classified as a computer but as a fruit ex. "I use a Macintosh G4 Cube fruit" not computer.

That doesn't mean s***. It doesn't matter if they're both trademarked. Apple has lots of trademarks. Companies trademark all sorts of stuff, the world is a big place.
Companies don't "encourage" a name for their products (wtf?!). *Gasp* They name their products. MacOS X is 100% wrong. Sorry to bust the geekbubble. They named it Mac OS X. Period. Not both. Not pick your own.
Good grief.

I don't agree with you about MacOSX. I don't think there should be a space between the OS and the X... it just looks like a mistake and no one types one in there. I can think of at least one instance where the public DID pick their own name for a company. When Acura was introduced in the U.S. they insisted in every car magazine and TV commercial that it was pronounced 'ah-COOR-a' and they 'encouraged' that pronunciation for a couple of years until they finally gave up and realized the public would never stop saying 'ACK-yur-a' and officially changed the pronunciation to the Americaneeze one!
I think if we keep on typing MacOSX as one word Apple will give in! In fact I always pronounce it 'mackohesex' as if it is one word like most other people do. Contrary to Stevo and most geeks here's opinion the public at large has NO idea that the 'X' is supposed to be a ten any more than they would think to call the new Windoze system 'Ten Pee'.
P.S. I hope your head doesn't explode when you read this. You seem real sensitive about mis placedspa ces! :-]

It does mean a **** because that is the format most people used, even Steve Jobs himself. You don't see Microsoft reserving Micro Soft.

This made my day.
Auto-analysis to save MacNN pedants a lot of work:
"This" = demonstrative pronoun; subject; implied antecedent: what version said.
"made" = verb; simple past (unbounded), active voice, 3rd pers. singular. From "make."
"my" = possessive adjective, 1st person sing., modifying...
"day" = uninflected noun; objective case, singular; direct object.

I've gotten into the habit of knowing when a thread goes off topic, even before I click on it. When a thread with a title like, "When does the new MACOSX comes out?" has over 40 posts, I know it's not about when the new Mac OS comes out. It's always fun to see how it got off base. In this case, if Adam Betts hadn't posted, this thread might not have reached 15 posts.

Maybe his didn't, but mine did. AGH! It doesn't look like a mistake at all, and a LOT of people type it properly ... Mac OS X. Mac OSX looks much worse, and whatever it is...use the proper name for the product! Mac OS X. Mac OS X. Mac OS X!
MicroSoft, MAC, MacOSX, MacnN ... ALL WRONG!
