Hey, the past two years, I've had a few problems with the file system on my iMac. I've had it tottaly screw up twice and both times I lost my whole boot volume. This has been on different HDs, recently I was lucky since this is a Rev D iMac I had to leave the first 6 gigs as a boot partition, so I had a second copy of OS 9 on my second partition, so I didn't loose anything but a text file that I spent a few days on. But I'll be getting an iBook soon, and would like to take my iMac with me to college, and use it's 60 gig HD as a backup disk for important files on my iBook, IE photos and essays and junk.
I'm assuming I can use AFP (that's what you use when connecting to a server from the finder right? Least under X.1 it was... I think...)
Hopefully after pather is released it'll be running on both machines, so I don't think it'll be to different from Jaguar.
So mind explaining how I could do this to someone who's not really had any experince networking, (basically I set up an ethernet hub for our PC and my iMac so I can use the net, that's it.)
Thanks for any help

Easiest & fastest way is Firewire Target Disk Mode (if both Macs have Firewire, anyway).
Hook up a firewire cable between the two Macs, boot one up while holding the "T" key, and watch its hard drive pop up on the other Mac's desktop.

The rev D iMac doesn't have Firewire.
To answer the question, though, I don't think you'll find this all that more complicated than simply plugging both computers into that hub that you mentioned (did you mean router?) with an ethernet cable (OK, that's two cables not one). If file sharing is turned on, the two Macs should see each other fine and you'd still be able to access your network through the router.

First, since neither the iBook or iMac have autosensing ethernet ports you'll need either a crossover cable or a hub and another ethernet cable.
Second, if you don't want to sit there all day make sure to use AFP over IP (easiest way to be sure of this is to make sure AppleTalk is OFF). In my experience using AFP over AppleTalk is much slower than AFP over IP, even on a local network.

The iBook does have an autosensing ethernet port. I plug my 500MHz machine into PCs and my own hub all the time using the same patch cable and it works without a problem.
So all you need to do this is an ethernet cable (either patch or crossover). Setting up the OS is very simple and I think there may be an assistant for this.

Which iBook do you have? Mine does not do this.

My dual USB 500Mhz iBook does do it.
I didnt think it did for a long time having read that only G4s did it. But it seems it does,

My iBook is the original white 500MHz dual-USB model. Apple's developer documentation on this model specifies that this model does have autosensing ethernet.
