I'm running 10.2.6 on 2 drives, one as a backup. Recently my primary system drive has started with some odd disc behavior.
If I put in a DVD, it plays in the Apple DVD player fine, but does not show up on the desktop. If I insert a CD it does not mount, or play, or show up in iTunes. The same goes for my firewire HD, and my iPod.
What's strange is if I launch disk utility, everything will show up, but will not mount even when I select "Mount" from the pull down menu (the disks/HD's are grey). This goes for everthing, CD's, DVD's, HD's, iPod's, etc.
I can still burn CD's and DVD's fine in toast though. When I stick in a blank disc, toast see's it and will burn, but when it's done it will not mount. When I boot from my backup drive, everything works fine. Any ideas?

You are not alone. I recently bought a LaCie firewire DVD/CD drive. I too can use Toast Lite 5.2.1 (the drive came bundled with toast lite) to copy but when I tried to mount a drive icon on the desktop 1) I could't find a drive icon to drag to the desktop 2)all other LaCie icons disappeared as soon as I dragged them onto the destop.

Going to the Apple System Profiler (Apple menu>About this Mac>More info button>Devices and Volumes folder) I found that my Mac did not know I had the LaCie drive in the firewire port. But the Toast Lite showed my DVD drive as available in a pull down menu but I could not select it.

With this state of affairs I emailed LaCie tech support and they said that since my drive was "new", Apple had not yet updated needed driver software required to mount my drive on my computer desktop. The LaCie tech told me it could be months before Apple would write the update. Are either of your drives recent purchases? Maybe you need updated driver software too.

Meanwhile back on the farm, I'm going to try disk utility. Hope you get a answer that helps. Thanks.
