Ok, here is my problem. I have a computer lab for Kindergarten students. One of my students just drug all of the icons out of the applications folder onto the desktop. As I was putting them back I accidently dropped the Chess icon just inside the Hard Drive not the Applications folder. Now it will not go into the Applications folder. It does make a copy there but I don't want two of them. What am I doing wrong.

I forgot to mention that when I try to trash the chess icon that is on the hard drive after making a copy in the applications folder it tells me that it is owned by root and can't be trashed.

Run "Repair Permissions" from "Disk Utility" in the Utilities folder (of not dragged elsewhere). You then should be able to delete files from the root of the hard disk as an admin user.

Maybe you should consider creating a non admin user for the students.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.
