I was just randomly surfing around when I stumbled over TG - demo page and it came back to me how much I liked the demo scene in my first years as a PC owner. I am not a programmer, but I think demos are the most entertaining part of the computer underground. If you take a closer look at that page you'll notice there is also intros. Intros are demos, but are limited to 65 kb in size. I especially liked "fr-08: the produc", the last intro, and a few others. Does anyone know the state of the demo scene on os x? Tnx.

[edit: I mentioned the wrong fav demo..]

It's practically non-existent. There are quite a few PowerBooks on parties, but they usually belong to graphic artists or musicians. Demos are usually ports from the PC if at all.

So no, no "real" demo scene on the Mac. But it's still fun going to the parties (Breakpoint rocked!)

That's a shame. It's certainly understandable that making and testing demos in good old OS 9 and older must have been a drag. But with OS X being so friendly for developers and all it's kind of surprising that we don't have our own scene yet. Hopefully the situation might improve some day. Perhaps it just needs some time?

There's a kind of catch-22: there are no Mac compos at the parties, because there are usually not enough submissions. Conversely, because there are no compos, nobody wants to go through the effort of making a demo if it doesn't make its way onto the big-screen. There's always the wild compos, of course, but that's not the same.

I think there's a dual G4 in the combined compo at the current Assembly, but this classic event has been overrun by gamers and is mostly a LAN party now. "Real" demoparties are pretty much PC, Amiga & C64 only (and booze). 4-5 submissions would be enough to organize something, so get coding

Thanks for your update. I am watching Assembly TV right now as I am typing this. Regarding your start coding suggestion, I am quite sure that could happen. My education of choice is pointing somewhere in that direction.
