Can Panther read (S)VCDs now?
The only way it is possible to read the dat tracks now is to use VCD Copy X as far as I know... or to use any other modern operating system other than Mac OS X.

Panther reads SVCD natively for me.
Insert SVCD, launch VideoLan Player, select the SVCD disk and play

I am using X.2.6 and have been able to read (S)VCD's for as long as I remember.
You can either use VLC to watch them, or MacVCD X with the quicktime MPEG2 component.

Oh well, VLC can play them and maybe MacVCD X too, but that is not what I meant. The question is rather:
Does Panther mount VCDs normally and can you for example use the Finder to copy the .dat file somewhere?
Versions up to 10.2.6 don't do that without help of third party applications.

OS X has always been able to "read" S/VCDs, all that it lacked was software able to play these disks. QuickTime used to be able to read dat files but I think they took that functionality out in when QT5 was released.

No, it has and is not. When I try to copy a dat/mpg file off a VCD the Finder gives me an error -36. And if it were able, then there would be no reason for a tool like VCDCopy X.
My question still is if Panther finally supports natively the reading of data from (S)VCDs. Current OS X version don't.

Copying is different than playing. OS X can read the disk copying a file off of a MODE2 CD is different than just reading the files contained within. Like I said, and as the topic states, it has always been able to read S/VCDs.

It was never able to read them well. It would struggle at just mounting them. In 7B28, they mount fast.
