When I move to some new student digs next month, I get free Internet 24/7 via Ethernet, in my room.
I expect i will cancel my ISP subscription which I currently use to dial up from home, since I will have free Internet access on this new network in the student accommodation.
Obviously I will lose the email address given by the ISP. However, I would like to continue using the OS X Mail.app for my e-mail. Am I right in thinking I can do this by setting it up for IMAP?
Is Yahoo IMAP? - could I sign up for a web based, free e-mail such as yahoo and check it via Mail.app?

I use mail.app and it can almost do what you want if Yahoo! would let it. Unfortunately, Yahoo! changed their email service and you cannot access a Yahoo! account anymore through another mail program (but you can access an MSN/hotmail account through mail.app. For $25 (I think, a years subscription to Yahoo!) they will forward the mail to an address you specify.
Mail.app is pretty impressive, seems to work flawlessly with MS Webmail exchange servers too!
If you have a lot of mail in yahoo, it is probably worth it to pay 'em once and have all the mail forwarded to your new account. In the meantime, phase it out and switch to hotmail.
Good luck.

thanks for the info. i want to keep clear of Hotmail - junk and spam is just overwhelming in previous experience. however i am also thinking about .Mac.
For the equivalent of about £6 a month there are the additional services too - backup, antivirus etc, presumably you can configure Mail.app to send and receive from a .Mac mac.com account?

Yes, using Mail.app with .Mac account is trivial. You specify in the account settings "This is a .Mac account" ;-) Have a look in mail, it's right in front of you ;-)
