The Finder is crashing when I move files between directories, from a CD or zip, to or from a server...basically any time I move a file the Finder crashes.

I am at a loss.

The Mac is a :
G3/266 Desktop w/a G4/466 OWC ZIFF
OSX 10.2.6
Radeon PCI
FW/USB card

To solve the problem, I have:
-booted from the OSX CD and run Disk Utillity
-removed the G4 and replaced the orig G3 (and reverted the jumpers)
-re-inserted the G4 and down clocked it to 466 from 500
-tried to work from different user accounts

None of it has helped.

I was assuming that the trouble was caused by the G4, but since it did exactly the same thing when I replaced the orig G3, I'm ruling that out. I have no clues and am at a loss. All other apps are running fine.

Any ideas?

I have the same problem with a 12" PB. I was copying files from a server, I grabed say 10 folders with 50 files in each folder and tried to copy, The OS would just hang there. It works fine one a a time. Ok not quite the same thing but close.

I wish this happened only on a server. I might be able to live with that. If I move anything, anywhere the Finder just quits and starts again.

I have no idea where to start looking for clues.

There are currently three users on the system. Can I still boot into single user? How?

Can I run fsck -y from my admin account?

I have the same problem at least once a day on my work computer. When opening or moving files in the finder, it crashes.

This is why I wait patiently for panther and it's new finder

reboot and holddown Command+s and that will take you to Single User Mode. Then " /sbin/fsck -y"

hope this helps.

Go ahead and post one of the crash logs here. That could help us understand what is going on in your machine.

I have the same problem with copying files from a file server, it even happens locally occasionally.

I'm not sure what the problem and no the crash logs don't tell me anything, but i have a nearly identical crash log in my logs. And it's only happened since upgrading to 10.2.6, this as well as the "Finder not running" bug in the dock when the finder is running (I disabled cleardock and APE and still have the same problem)

I'd downgrade but it's really not worth it since 10.2.7 and Panther are both impending.

One thing to check is removing any Firewire drives.

After flawless OS X operation since 10.0, suddenly, my Finder started giving me the spinning beachball of death, and even a panic or two.

Eventually, I tracked it down to my external Firewire drive. Once I replaced the enclosure with a new one, everything was fine. Thus, I suspect the Firewire controller in the old drive enclosure had gone bad.
