I know I've seen this before, but I never paid attention as i didn't need to do this until now...

So anyway, I just created a main user account on my new laptop, and i want to create a second user that matches all my customized settings now - in case something happens with my primary down the line.

So I ned to know the best way to clone my current account, and the replace the secondary account. I am aware of CCC, but I'm really looking for some detailed steps.

Any comments are appreciated! Thanks,

Uisce

If you copy your entire home directory's contents to /System/Library/User Template/English.lproj/ and then repair permissions on the drive all new accounts created should be exact duplicates of your account. This is a great way to set up a bunch of accounts with custom dock settings and preferences for various apps.

Make sure to backup the default template before overwriting if you need it.

Obviously, if you are not running in English use the appropriate folder in the template folder.

I forgot to mention that you will need to change the permissions on the User Templates folder first so that you can copy your stuff in there.

Why do you need to create a cloned user account? Just back up your user directory and you should be able to restore easily enough to the same account or another if you account somehow gets "corrupted". I just d a ditto of my user directory to my iPod every couple of days or so. If there's a problem with my user account, I can login as another admin user and ditto it back.

Okay, so if I want to reformat my HD, and I have ditto'd my user account onto my iPod, after I resinstall, I can ditto my stuff back and all will be right?

Ditto is a Nix command right?

ditto x folder x location?

Can I just use CCC?

Carbon Copy Cloner is essentially a GUI pretty face that the developer put on the ditto command, so yes.
