Apple will refund owners of PowerPC G3-based Macs who bought Mac OS X but found elements of the operating system didn't work on their computers.
The company's decision appears in documents filed with the Los Angeles Superior Court, MacCentral reports.
The filing marks the latest stage in a class action lawsuit brought against the company in January 2002. Apple's offer is conditional on its acceptance by the case judge.
About time.

Glad as I am to see the settlement, and Apple have to pay for its "puffery," its kinda hollow, especially if one bought a G3 late enough in the game with a reasonable expectation that Apple's OS would continue to support it.
That said, I'm running 10.2.6 on a G3 Lombard Powerbook 333, and despite the slowness and problems, I like it and speedy OS9 equally (though differently). I won't be lining up for a refund.

Oddly enough, I will be taking them up on it. Well, ok, my mother will but still. She has a B&W tower that right after the warranty was up on it, all the hardware problems you can imagine popped up. Jaguar will not install on it; instead, it sits at the installer with 6 minutes to go then KP's. I can install Jag on the hard drive in another computer but it still causes problems on her computer. Needless to say, she's running OS 9.2.2 and cannot upgrade. I think its the motherboard, but she doesn't have the time or money to send it in. Plus, its her only computer.

Just to let you know. You will only get the refund if you haven't used Mac OS X on the computer and don't plan to use it.

B&W G3s are not covered by this.
Your mother's computer has a hardware fault (bad RAM?).

RAM tested fine. Why are the iBooks covered when they came out AFTER the B&W? Ah well, such is life.

Because the iBooks don't have a GPU that is a Rage 128 or newer.

I heard that if you want to continue using OS X you can collect a $25 coupon. Wow, I bought OS X for my iMac, perhaps I can get that.
