****. I"m an idiot. I changed my home mac using 10.2.6 (or .7) from auto login to password only login because I was on a trip for 3 weeks and didn"t want the construction guys fooling with my machine while I was away. Sure enough, I accidently checked the option that makes you hav to put in your login name as well as the password. Guess what? I forgot that name since I made it 4 years ago...
Like I said...I'm an idiot.
So, is there any way to bypass this? Help needed!

Boot single user mode, (command-s on startup). Then look in /Users and see the name of the user folder in there. That's your short name which you use for login.
If you forgot your password too, you will have to reset it using the OSX install CD (boot from it, it's in the menu).

OS X is not 4 years old ...
If you boot from an install cd and under installer option chouse to reset the password, it will show you the list of all available users on the system partition

It's been quite a while since I installed, but doesn't it convert your OS 9 users?

Can't you remember your long name either? You see that every time you update or do something else that requires authentication.
