In Mac OS 9 if you clicked on an alias (to a folder) then pressed Command-Up it took you to the parent folder of the original item.

In OS X Command-Up takes you to the parent of the Alias

I find this quite irritating, especially as there is already Command-[ for "Back" and Command-Up is nothing to do with Back. It means "Take me to the parent of this item."

I also don't want the huge "Path" toolbar item in my Finder Windows as some kind of work-around.

Do you think this is a bug in OS X - or do you think it's intentional behaviour to make things 'easier'?

i think it makes more sense to have it go to the parent folder since that action is closer to the opposite of opening a file or folder (command-down arrow). aliases should act as other files do except when you open them. but if you don't want the path toolbar item there, just customize your toolbar. keep in mind you can also command click on the folder's title bar to get its path.

Yes - I got rid of the path item long ago - and you can go through the proxy, but the point is that there is no way to get up using the keyboard! I've never had the Finder block my way before. I've been using a Mac since 1989 and not being able to go anywhere by keyboard seems odd. (and it slows me down.)

I've now filed a bug about this in Radar.
