Ugh... those controls on the Text panel may look good but they are awful to use...
A circular controls, come on Apple haven't you learnt from the fiasco that was Quicktime 4? The angle display should be a text box to enter the angle... Trying to dial 45° using that control is going to be awful...
The sliders are quite the abomination too, look at the size of those controls...
Awful.

I don't think the font panel is for you graphic gods. It is for the rest of us. So I think the controls are nice.

Its difficult to get it exactly 45° using the tiny circular slider...or any other exact degree.
may look good but they are awful to use...
Regarding the horizontal white sliders:
They look lovely but after trying to use them for a while they are certainly not the easiest control to use. Its important to note that you don't need to click on the tiny dot in the slider to adjust it - anywhere along the line will do.
On the down side, shadows don't appear when a text document is saved as a pdf or when using print preview.

In the middle of the upper edge right below the window title there's one of these hold-and-drag spots, what can you open there?

Damn, and there's me about to say how nice it looked. It's still a very nice new feature - maybe they'll take feedback on the interface.
What's the circle above the controls? Is that to move or stretch the panel... or does it reveal a nice preview panel?

Font Preview:
Also see the styles feature in text edit, allows you to easily customise/make you own and set text styles.

For those of us without Panther, where can we find an image of the new font panel? I haven't seen it under the screenshots on Think Secret or any of the usual places.
Concerning JBoss, someone on AppleInsider was claiming that was part of OS X Server, not OS X Client.

Images of the new font panel are embedded in this thread (see above). If you can't see them, click this link:

If the user interface complies with expectations, I think you ought to be able to hold the shift key down as you drag the dial to contrain it to 45 degree increments. Does that work?

I thought something was up (everyone mentioning them when I saw nothing). It appears to be a Camino problem. The images from the link loaded in other browsers.
Concerning the comment about compression, tiff is definately too big (don't need crystal clear quality 1 MB images to get the point about the new control stuff). png is a good lossless format that results in much smaller file sizes.

Absolutely, its way too big. But I didn't have time to convert them when I posted.

Well some other people do...considering its a new feature.
What exactly would you like a screenshot of?

Nope, no difference. Its not impossible to get it exact but its not brilliantly easy either.

Those text features definitely look good, however I have always disliked the idea of a "font panel." There is no reason that a seperate window should be used for that, it should be part of the toolbar in textedit, or any other application.

Making it a pallette makes it easy for other programs to use it - just like the color pallette.

I totally disagree. Trying to fit all your fonts into one menu makes it impossible to find the one you want, and putting each font name in its own font only helps for Latin text fonts. The font menu should show a few favourite fonts, but we need a font panel for the rest.
Barney.

Are there any new Preferences or any new icons anywhere?
Is File Vault implemented yet?
Any new features in the Dock? In the Dock, when you Hide an app via the menu, does it read "Show" when the app is hidden?(Was broken in previous build)

I'm growing worried about the lack of new desktop pictures and screensavers. Apple needs to throw in some snazzy new stuff to differentiate Panther from Jaguar...

Yes this should be top priority for Apple in this crucial stage of development.

I agree, we need some more desktop pictures, screensavers, user pictures etc. These might come later in the development process.

Anyone remember when in the development process the new blueish desktop pic and that Flurry screensaver made it into Jaguar?
Are you guys sure it was at the very end?

How's the debug code coming along? They take it out yet? Mine still has it -- I think I have 7B39 v2.0. Hmm.... It is snappy, at least.

I would be surprised if Panther will have new desktop images and new screen savers.

No offense to you, personally, MindFad (you're not the only one to do it)... but didn't the whole reference to the removal of "debug code" and the OS being "Snappier (TM)" lose it's humor... like over a year ago...???
When will those references die already...?

I would be disappointed if it won't. The competition has more and better desktop pictures.

I know, I was making an effort to try and keep it alive. Alas, I think its time is up. I'll never do it again.
Seriously, though, when I tried out the first Panther preview, it was a bit snappier in the menu and contextual menu performance area.
Sounds like it's shaping up really well -- can't wait for it.

It is very true though... we do need a lot more desktop pictures. And hey, it gives our PC loving friends(if we can call them that ;p) one less thing to cut Macs down about.
I think Apple should have at least twice as many desktop pictures to choose from than they have now.

No, this is where your wrong. The competition has 24 original desktop pictures all at the max of 1024x768 resolution. Apparently they are sooo retard they don't know anything about graphics or resolution. F*UCK any company that makes me pay $150 for their OS and can't properly rasierize images or include more than 1990's resolutions. (Windows)

The sliders look like they could be a bit larger, but a circular control for setting the degree of shadow is one of the few places where it actually makes sense. It's pointless to apply the flawed QT4 interface controls (e.g. a circular control to adjust volume) to a control that does something completely different.
As long as it "snaps" to right angles, or shift-holding the control will constrain it to right angles, it could work very well.
I think the new font panel controls show a lot of promise.
