OK, `fink' tells I could update `system-xfree86' [placeholder], fine, but then when I try to do that it fails when installing `system-xfree86-42/3' or something. :er:

what am I supposed to do?

Hi VEGAN!
Long time, no "see"! I didn't realize that a placeholder needed updating because I don't use it. It's little more than a preinstall script that checks to guarantee that the installation of Apple's X11 is adequate to Fink's needs. It now seems to have separate checks depending on whether Apple's X11 is based on XFree86 4.2 or 4.3. I assume that the latter applies to people with seeds of Panther. Make sure that you're upgrading to the one that applies to the version of Apple's X11 you have installed. Regardless, it would be necessary to have the exact error message to search the preinstall script to figure out exactly what it doesn't like about your installation. Post that and we'll work it out. Be sure to indicate whether you're upgrading to the 42 or 43 version.

Hi Vegan,
Sorry it's taking a long time to reply; this is the busiest time of the year for us. I think that the guys at Fink failed in the unusual task of upgrading a package with one of a different name. (from a choice of two) I assume that the error was the result of the inability to remove the old placeholder due to dependencies. (most Fink packages depend on X11) It's my suspicion that the guys at Fink will fix it in a day or two, if not already. Otherwise, the old package will have to be forcibly removed, which I believe requires dpkg. Try the following:

dpkg -r --force-depends system-xfree86

When that's done, you shouldn't have any trouble installing the replacement. At least that's the theory; let us know how it goes!

Well, I've had the same problem here. Started weeks ago if I remember correctly. What you suggested, Gary, worked fine. Thanks.

This is a known problem and recently there was a FAQ entry added. Please read:
