On occasion my wife's eMac boots with a low tone, flashing light, regular chime, then the open firmware screen appears with a reboot or or boot-mac options.

What's the deal?

Sounds like bad RAM, did you add any recently? Try pulling any extra RAM and see if it still behaves that way. If fixes the problem, see if you can exchange the DIMM you pulled for a new DIMM. Memory typically has a lifetime warranty.

A tone at startup indicates a hardware problem. There is an article somewhere in Apple's KB that details what the tones mean.

The tone and flashing power power button are like when updating the firmware. When updating the firmware you hold the power button until the power button flashes and there is a long tone. Could it be a sticky power button?

Possibly, but the hardware diagnostic tones sound the same as the firmware update tone.

I did that, and it got worse, but then I zapped the pram and it seems to be OK. I guess either resetting the OF or the pram by themselves didn't fix it. It has been rebooted 5 times without trouble.

Getting there is half the fun.
