How does one easily, or seamlessly, upgrade from iMac to iMac vis-a-vis iTunes and iPod, as well, iPhoto libraries, ad infinitum? Sounds easy, but if you think it through, it's really not...

Have network, done incremental machine upgrades (some files transferred, iPhoto Libraries archived, etc.) before.

thanks!

The fastest and easiest way to transfer your files would be to boot up one of the Macs (preferably the new one) in Target Disk Mode (by holding down the "T" key on startup), which will turn the Mac into an external Firewire drive. Then, just hook it up to the older Mac with a Firewire cable, watch it mount, and copy over all your files and Preferences. (Your home folder, as well as /Library)

Restart the new Mac. Run Disk Utility immediately and Repair Permissions.

That *should* be about it.

Depending on whether you've had any weird drivers installed in /System/Library, you may have to reinstall them.

Quite painless, no?

You should just be able to copy your Home Directory over to the new computer, repair permissions, and you should be all set.

Thanks a lot! I thought target disk mode was relegated to PowerBooks only. Sweet!

so, can I rename the Home directory (so as to be a different user, or will that completely screw things up?

thanks!

You can use a new name when you copy back the stuff from the old system. The problem is you have to let the system know about it so the permissions are updated.

Some time ago I tried to write a little guide in this forum how to accomplish this task. I think it is best done in Terminal.app.

Read the last part of the guide, it will show you how you have to update the permissions for a new user name.

HTH. Feel free to ask if you have more questions or need some more help.
