I did an Archive and Install after having some problems. After this, my AirPort card was turned off and no locations were created, so I went to make a location and enable the AirPort card. I hit Apply and thought that would take care of it.

WRONG.

Two more Archive and Installs later and still not working. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Are you preserving users and network settings when you archive and install?

Yes, I am. I wasn't having any problems before doing the reinstalls, though. I did this because I didn't want to lose my Home directory.

Try this:

1. Uncheck Airport as one of your active configs in the Network Port Configurations.
2. Restart
3. Check it again and restart again.

Sometimes this resets weird things that get broken.

However, that may be propagating your problem.

Also, what is the problem? You haven't explained what you're seeing.

Actually, I thought I explained it fairly well, but here goes again.

After doing an Archive and Install, my AirPort card no longer works. In the AirPort menu, it says that AirPort is off and to go to Network Preferences. I go to Network Preferences and there are no locations showing up. I create a new location and uncheck everything but AirPort (I don't use my modem or Ethernet card). I click to apply, and quit System Preferences.

The AirPort menu still shows the card as being off, even after a restart. So I go back into Network Preferences and find that my location has disappeared. (Shouldn't there be a Default location?) I create it again, and the same problem keeps happening.

I have archived and installed twice now and the same thing keeps happening.

Have you run Disk Utility and repaired permissions?

You can try another archive and install, but don't preserve users and network settings this time. You can still recreate your account and transfer all your files from the archive to the new account

Better yet, move aside /private/var/db/SystemConfiguration/preferences.xml. That is where the network locations and settings are stored. It is probably corrupted. Archiving and Installing while preserving users and network settings would not recreate that file. It would be brought forward with each install.

Thank you! That seems to have done the trick. After removing it, it found a signal right away - it made a default location like it had always done in the past.

Thanks again!
