It all started when I tried viewing pdf files. Preview would launch and then nothing happened. I tried going to File-Open, but that didn't work either. I would have to force quit the app.
Now, last night Acrobat has been doing the exact same thing with pdf's and I don't know what is wrong.
By the way I'm running 10.2.6

I had the same problem with Preview 2 days ago. I trashed the pref file and its working now. If you do not know how to do this, do the following:
1. Open Finder and go to your Home directory
2. Open the Library folder
3. Open the Preferences folder
4. Delete the file called 'com.apple.Preview.plist
Launch Preview. All should be well. If you are having the same problem with Adobe Reader/Acrobat, I would do the same for them as well. I hope this helps.

Thanks jedakroub,
Preview is back from the dead. However, acrobat still wont launch.
Man, I love this OS, but it really stinks when stupid things like this happen and you don't know what to do. (:

Funny thing -- my preview died the other day, too.
I had recently done two things involving Preview directly and indirectly
1) installed Kunvert,
2) Recently also added or 'moved' (can't remember which) Preview to a prime position on my Finder Window Toolbar.
Agree - one doesn't expect this kinds of wonkiness in OSX -- who knows maybe the 3rd party app did the nasty, but. . .
I also am not able to drag icons out of my dock without crashing it -- and that's after ditching .plists, reparing permissions, 'restoring the dock' to it's original state, etc.
but sure do appreciate the tips here

It should be standard to have a 'reset' under all preferences screens... whether it's an Apple app or not.
