I just started using my iMac 17" which I swapped my XP machine for. Anyway, everything is very intuitive so far, and I love it. However, I just downloaded MSN Messenger 3.5.1 and when I did, it placed 2 items on my desktop:
1. Messenger351.dmg
2. MSN Messenger 3.5.1
The *.dmg item looks like a file of some sort, and the other looks like a disk drive (the type is "Volume" in the get info. screen).
Anyway, what are these, and why are they cluttering my tidy desktop? Also, how do I get rid of them (hide) without getting rid of the program?
Thanks,
Mike

The .dmg file is a Disk Image. When you download it it is mounted by Disk Copy, which is found in the folder /Applications/Utilities. When Disk Copy mounts it it acts just like a disk (like a floppy or Zip disk) and that's what the other one is, the Volume, it's the virtual disk. To get your file(s) out of it just drag them out of the mounted volume and to where you want them, in this case your Applications folder. It will copy it instead of just moving it because it is acting just like a real disk. When you're done just eject the volume like it was a real disk (drag to trash/right-click -> eject) and trash the *.dmg.

That worked like a charm. The only slight problem I had is that I had already put the icon in the dock, and it must have been tied to the original copy. When I trashed the original, the icon in the dock wouldn't open. I just got rid of that icon, and dragged the icon located in the applications folder, and that worked fine.
Thanks again for the quick help...

When you do these...first read the 'read me' file in the volume window. Not often, but sometimes, the application needs to be in a specific place. Thats usually the top of the 'Applications' folder. After a while, you'll get that folder organized the way you like it with a dozen of your own sub-catagory folders inside. One time it'll happen...you'll file the app where YOU want it, then wonder why the little bastitch won't run.
After you're done copying from the volume, just close it's window and give it a CMD-E. With a removable that ejects...with a DMG, it puts it in the trash. (Damn I miss cmd-Y)
And I always keep the compressed file in a 'Stuft' folder for a while. Sometimes, something goes bad and you need to reinstall.
Oh, and if that's your first Mac...welcome.

If you don't want files to be downloaded to the desktop, just create a folder called "Downloads" (or whatever) where you want it. Then use the preferences of your browser to change the downloading to that folder.
I download to a folder on the root of the drive, so that it doesn't fill up my User folder, where I keep more personal things.
