He gets the spinning thing when the computer starts up, but then nothing. It just sits there. He can't boot from the OS X CD, but he can from the Norton SystemWorks CD, but it doesn't find anything wrong. Any suggestions?

Boot into verbose mode (holding down Command-V), and see what it stops on.

We tried that, this is what it stopped on:

"can't port for window system on port /dev/console"

What's that mean, do you know?

I had a problem like that once, I had to reset the PRAM, which I forgot the key combination for it, call Apple they will help. After resetting the PRAM we booted from the OS X CD, and had to reinstall. Though this was a total accident, power went out during a OS X update, in the middle of the install too.

Apple + Option + P + R will zap your pram. hold down this combination after you power on the machine. Once you hold it down, you'll hear the startup chime again. Keep holding down to repeat the process again and see if that works.
