An icon named "MobileAccountsBadge.tiff" can be found in Panther 7B44 in the following location:
/System/Library/CoreServices/SecurityAgent.app/Resources/MobileAccountsBadge.tiff

I don't believe its been seen before.

What's a mobile account? Is it a User folder that can be moved around on a portable Firewire drive?

Yeh an account you can take with you on an ipod or portable drive, basically a way to take all your files with you where ever you go and be able to use them on different macs.

Apple already announced Mobile Accounts during the Panther Server webcast at MacOSXLabs.org back in July.

Really? Didn't catch that.

In any case, this is from Panther client (which assumes atleast compatibiliy) and shows the icon - which I don't believe has been shown.

Interesting, so how is this different then say "copying my User folder" right now onto a drive and placing on an exisiting machine?

Panther Server is what drives it. It is a feature that Panther Server provides to Panther Clients. It allows clients to continue to use their network accounts when not connected to their network.

I'm *guessing* that its just an easy way to do it. Currently you'd have to copy your entire home directory to your portable drive then modify NetInfo to reflect the new location on your portable drive - then you'd have to do that on every machine you wanted to use, together with making sure permissions and worked on every machine.

I'm also willing to bet it also automatically adds 'Mobile Accounts' to the login window list when the portable drive is connected / removes when disconnected.

In that case I'm guessing wrong "Mobile Accounts" seems like the wrong name for a feature like that...and the icon suggests being able to take your account on the road maybe?Just my opinion!

It does let you take your account "on the road." If you have a PowerBook at work and have a network account at work, it lets you to continue using that network account elsewhere even when you are no longer connected to your work network. It's similar to the new iDisk capabilities in Panther.
