Hey all, I'll be getting my first mac relatively soon (5-7 weeks or so they say!) and although I've used OSX at work somewhat frequently and I've been roaming these forums quite a bit, I'd like to get a book to help me really get off to the right start. I know basic operations but I'm not too familiar with alot of the programs, and some intermediate/advanced features (partitioning, apple scripts, setting up hardware, etc).

So what book would cater to my level of umm.. 'macness' the best? Also, would it be better to wait til books on panther are released (assuming panther and it's books are released before I get the darn box)?

And lastly, are there good websites that offer similar info to the books?

Thanx in advance,
XSwift

Honestly, you don't really need a book. 95% of everything you'll need to do is so easy you'll get it right away. Another 4% can be found at a website like http://www.osxfaq.com/ . The final 1%, which you may never even have to deal with, you can get from here. Enjoy your new Mac!

Another pretty good one is here:
http://www.macosxhints.com/

If you'd like a printed book (I still like to read printed, paper books, instead of looking at a monitor all the time) you can pick up MacOS X In a Nutshell from O'Reilly. It covers all of Jag and has a complete list of all the supported UNIX commands. Two others I've seen but haven't read are The Missing Mac OS X Manual (also from O'Reilly) and Robin Williams' Little MacOS X book.

EDIT: Just remembered reading this, O'Reilly and Apple just updated their hot deals site and the prices on both books are pretty good:
