I just bought a new Iiyama Pro 454 19" CRT which uses a standard 15pin VGA cable. This replaces my Apple 17" Studio CRT which uses an ADC cable. Aside from the higher spec I wanted to switch to a VGA monitor since I plan to buy the new Radeon 9800 retail graphics card. However, I've run into some resolution problems with my new monitor.

My Apple Studio CRT always used the highest possible refresh rates in OSX including games - sometimes >100Hz! My new Pro454 is an even higher spec display (1600*1200 @ 100Hz), but I'm lucky to get 75Hz out of it on my Mac. The pull down menu for changing resolutions only allows 75Hz for each res. I found that I can choose a higher refresh if I go into System Prefs / Displays. But that doesn't always work. The supported refresh rates are shown, but they are ghosted out and can't be selected. Oddly, sometimes lower refresh rates are even ghosted out as unavailable?!?! The problem gets even wierder for OSX games. I've noticed in DiabloII and Quake3 that the refresh rates drop to 60Hz and 70Hz at times. It's not all that bad for D2 (other than having to reset the screen size). But FPS games in particular tend to suffer from flicker and tearing effects when you're running high frame rates with low refresh.

Is there any way to force OSX to only use the higher refresh rates supported by the monitor - ESPECIALLY in games? Or was that a function of the ADC interface on the Apple Studio CRT? I've tried unchecking the "show recommended modes" in displays, but that only un-ghosts the lower resolutions. The refresh still defaults to 75Hz with higher (and lower) refresh rates still ghosted out. It really sucks to have this new higher spec CRT and not be able to use it at the higher spec ........joe

Here are my G4 Tower specs:
- 1.467Ghz G4 Giga-Designs (original dual 533)
- Apple OEM GF4Ti 128MB (with OEM DVI->VGA adapter)
- 1.5GB PC133 RAM
- 80GB IBM HD (7200rpm)

It's a 'thing' with Iiyama displays. there's some software you can buy, forgot what it's called, res-switcher or something that enables higher refresh rates.

I doubt there's a "thing" with IIyama displays cause there's a "thing" also with sony displays....

1280X960 can be run by the monitor specs at 85Hz but it only runs at 75Hz. I only get 85Hz on 1024X768.
And the reason I bought this monitor was cause it was the only 17' monitor that could get this high resolution at 85Hz.
So I guess it's an OS "thing" and not a monitor "thing".

Hmm, I've got the same IIyama monitor hooked up a Powerbook, and i have the display set to 1280x1024 @ 85hz, seems to work fine.
