I am not too familiar with the inner workings of fink, so I downloaded the latest version as well as fink commander. All seemed fine until decided to clear my terminal. Here's what I got:

[NYmac:~] me% clear
dyld: clear version mismatch for library: /usr/lib/libncurses.5.dylib (compatibility version of user: 6.0.0 greater than library's version: 5.0.0)
Trace/BPT trap

fink loads it's own init script which places it's bin and sbin locations before anything else on my PATH. That's pretty intrusive wouldn't you say? I question the claim of fink's peaceful coexistence when it breaks some basic commands such as clear.

I think I know how to go back to my pre fink environment but I rather see if i can have it coexist without breaking anything. Any ideas, clues. Thanks.

Well, I figured I rather let Fink break as opposed to messing up something in Darwin. So I hesitate to upgrade. I guess I can also wait for panther, I hear it has something similar to Fink.

There are some very helpful people in the fink-beginners list. Also, the fink documentation does address your library question.

You can use fink then completely remove it.

The installer does ask if it can add to your .tcshrc file and if allowed places the source parameter that added to your $path.

FYI

Thanks I'll look into that.

Uhm... I'll look into that too.

This is exactly what I did.

It did, but it should have mentioned that it was going to override the system defaults. It could have placed itself at the end of the PATH. Fink is also pretty good at indicating dependencies, so it was a bit of surprise that it installed without warning me about the library issue. I was so pissed that I threw the sw folder straight into garbage -uhm... this actually sounds violent, cool.

Simple communication oversights such as the above give you that bad feeling the bigger unexpected things could be going on under the hood that you don't know about. This confusion was about "clear" that's one of the first actions that the user will take.

Anyway, it's really no big deal. I was easy enough to revert to pre Fink state. No harm done. It's free, I really shouldn't knock it, I'll give it a another shot shortly and look into the library issue further.

Thanks!
